Core Training

Flatten Your Abs

We will work with you to establish all the factors that you may have over looked when doing workouts to flatten your abdominal wall.  Everyone wants a nice flat stomach but there can be many reasons why your stomach sticks out or protrudes over the top of your jeans. Sometimes more advanced lab testing is required and we can do that to but in the first instance we start with the correct core exercises for you.

At Balanced Fitness we will first of all assess how you breathe and how you stand.  We also need to find out how you use your stomach muscles when you move or workout.  What happens when you consciously try to use your stomach muscles can tell us alot about how you have trained them in the past and how we should start to train them correctly this time.

Some simple exercises that can be done at home, work or in the car and even whilst lying in bed will begin the progress of raising your awareness of how to make your abdominal muscles contract but also help understand when to use them.

We also advise on "homework" exercises that you can do maybe at the gym or in a quiet space in your own home that start to challenge the abdominals and help tone them up.

Once we can get your deep stomach muscles switched on and working we can then work week to week to strengthen them up and create a toned midsection.  Only once you can contract the deep abdominal muscles, the ones that are commonly weak and underused can you truly work towards a flat abdominal wall.

As the workouts progress in difficulty you will begin to learn how to use these deep, weak muscles instead of the strong superficial muscles, that most people refer to as your "6 pack".  The "6 pack" muscle even if covered in a layer of fat typically works too often and causes the weaker, deep muscles to switch off and lose tone hence your lower abdomen can appear distended.  This normally makes you want to eat less and exercise more as oppose to working on this muscle imbalance.

In time we can reduce the muscle imbalance to such a degree that you can go on to use your stomach muscles in everyday tasks and sport.  When you squat or lunge at the gym, when using the cross-trainer, when pushing a trolley round the supermarket, when picking up a child. So with the core training you will receive at Balanced Fitness you will be able to use your stomach muscles all day long not just when you are lying on a mat in an exercise class.

Here is an example of a range of exercises suitable for correcting how your core muscles function.

A balanced approach to your health?

To achieve a healthy balance between the food you eat and your exercise programme you must first find out what is right for you.

Having had ME for 3 years, I’ve tried various approaches to aid recovery – some more helpful than others. Balanced Physiotherapy was recommended to me by a friend with ME who found Bowen Therapy with Judith to be gentle, relaxing and energy boosting. I have found the same thing.

Following Judith’s suggestion, I now also have osteopathy with Lisa and dietary advice from Stephen. It has been so helpful having holistic care within one clinic where notes are shared and there is obviously communication between the therapists.

The therapists are friendly and flexible with appointments – great when you have an unpredictable illness. I feel the charges are fair and reasonable too.

Although I have along way to go, I certainly feel that my therapists have improved my condition and with ME that is a huge bonus.
